Through the group exhibition Umwelt, held in March and July 2025, we explored how five artists perceive and represent the world—each from a different visual perspective—revealing both the divergences and overlaps in their ways of seeing.
“Umwelt” refers to the world as it is perceived and constructed subjectively by each living being—each according to its own unique sense of time and space. The two previous exhibitions offered an opportunity to engage with five such worlds, but they were only the beginning. From here, we aim to continue presenting these artists' evolving expressions as a central direction for the gallery’s future.
Before moving forward, however, we wanted to create an opportunity to look back—an occasion to reacquaint ourselves with the journey thus far. This is what Field Notes from the Umwelt sets out to share: a record of that journey.
In this exhibition, there are no works pre-installed in the space. Instead, for each visitor, we will present one artwork—selected and introduced personally, along with its background and the history leading up to it.
We are also producing a booklet titled Field Notes from the Umwelt, which will be distributed at the gallery. The core edition features images of the works from five artists—Masaki Okuten, Hyeongki Kim, Keita Sagaki, Yoichiro Nishimura, and Masaya Yoshioka—with each two pages. In addition to this base structure, we’ve prepared various random pages to create multiple versions of the booklet. Visitors will also have the option to add or edit pages on-site, creating their own personalized field note to take home.
Both the perspectives of those who create and those who view are inherently diverse. We hope that, within your copy of the field notes, you’ll discover a world that resonates with your own.
